Mr Andrew Healey is a Consultant General and Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) surgeon, specialising in endoscopic ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of gallstone and pancreatic disease, hernias, and abdominal pain. He is the HPB cancer lead for South East Scotland Cancer Network (SCAN). Mr Healey is available for private in-person consultations at Spire Edinburgh Hospitals (Murrayfield and Shawfair).
Mr Healey graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2001 and completed his preregistration house officer year in Edinburgh. He underwent further training in Accident and Emergency Medicine at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, where he also taught anatomy to medical students. He completed his surgical training at the London Postgraduate School of Surgery, with posts including The Royal Marsden, Chelsea and Westminster, Hammersmith, Charing Cross, and the Royal Surrey County Hospitals.
While at Hammersmith Hospital, Mr Healey undertook laboratory and clinical research into the role of laparoscopic liver resection and hypoxia in liver cancer, for which he was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD(Res)) degree by Imperial College London in 2012. He was appointed Trauma Fellow at the Royal London Trauma Unit and Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa.
Mr Healey is a JAG-accredited upper-gastrointestinal endoscopist and completed a European Society of Gastroenterology Fellowship in diagnostic and interventional endoscopic ultrasound at San Raffaele Hospital, Milan, Italy.
Aside from his clinical practice, Mr Healey actively participates in undergraduate and postgraduate education as a member of the Academy of Clinical Educators, a tutor for the University of Edinburgh Master of Surgery programme, and a member of the South East Scotland Surgical Training Committee. He is involved in clinical research, with peer-reviewed publications, and serves as an invited reviewer for academic journals such as HPB, Patient Safety in Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, BMC Surgery, World Journal of Surgery, and The Surgeon. Mr Healey has also worked with the General Medical Council and National Patient Safety Agency on initiatives to reduce medical error and improve patient safety and is currently serving his second term as a member of the European HPB Association Innovation Committee.
